Financial Aid Resources

Financial Aid is the funding used to pay for college in the form of grants, scholarships, and loans.

Loans can come from different sources: Federal Student Loans, Parent Plus Loans, Private Loans, or Loans from the college directly (rare, but there are some colleges that do this). You need to first apply for financial aid in order to see what your family qualifies for.

Scholarships and Grants can come directly from the college, or from grants/scholarships not associated directly with the college. Students usually need to apply for scholarships and grants in order to be considered for them.

FAME is a remarkable Financial Aid resource for Maine students and families. FAME holds online and in-person financial aid help sessions and their website is full of helpful resources.

FAFSA

For the most part, all students and their families will have to submit a FAFSA- Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  The application is available starting on Oct 1. each year. By filing the FAFSA, students can become eligible for federal student aid and possibly financial aid through the colleges they are applying to.

CSS Profile

Some colleges require an additional financial aid application called a CSS Profile. See the list of schools that require the CSS Profile and other supporting documents, such as IDOC uploads. Note: Pay attention to financial aid deadlines for each college.

FAFSA Forecaster

Parents of students in 11th grade and below can use this tool to estimate the amount of financial aid they may qualify for before filing a FAFSA. This information is helpful for determining if your family qualifies for financial aid, and determining what the actual cost of college may be for your family.
